I went camping this weekend, and before I left I knew I needed a new fire starter (the fire steel and magnesium kind). So, naturally I went to the store and found a cheap one and bought it. It looked like the one pictured.
So, where's the tip? DON'T BUY ONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS!!! It is a cheap knockoff of the original Doan. You can generally spot a bad magnesium block by the matte, shiny silver surface it has as opposed to the finish you see here:
The knockoff isn't pure magnesium and won't light, in fact it took 10 minutes of heating up in a very, very hot fire's core to actually light the magnesium. You'll waste a lot of time trying to start a fire. It is possible, just way way more effort.
So when you go buy a fire steel with magnesium block, buy a name brand. It isn't even much more expensive.

I can attest to this. Some scouts threw one of these in a massive fire we built; it took a good 15 minutes before it ignited. Uselessly high activation energy.

Did you get the first or second one? I have the first and it's a beast of a lighter. The striker alone has a pretty potent shower of sparks and fine enough magnesium shavings light easily.

Flamethrower also works well.

What? 9 Volt and some steel wool not doing it for you?

Love those. I had one like it but I must have lost it. Need to grab another.

for $10 more you can get one attached to a high quality stainless steel knife. Seriously the blade is fantastic.

that is essentially very similar, except without magnesium for the wet conditions. But yeah, I need to spend a few more bucks and get something nicer lol

Eh, I guess just not my style lol. I could have just as easily used a bic for the dry days, but that's no fun.

The first is what I got. You must have something different, as my experience was that of the "bad" starter in this video.

Yeah those are pretty nice. I just like the magnesium for more wet conditions. These do come with the flint on top, just I like the magnesium depending on the conditions and wetness.

The flint is a magnesium alloy (not quite sure the exact ratio's) and it sparks at around 2,980°C and it's done quite well for me in wet conditions.
